I was asked to dumb down, or rather, simplify my writing. What do you make of it?
If you used this metaphor, but expanded on it slightly and worked on the rhythm of your prose (yes, topflight prose has rhythm and is phonologically textured), this could form the basis for a prose poem. May I suggest you read Baudelaire's 'Paris Spleen' because I think the experience would be a revelation for you, or anyone else, unfamiliar with it. Do not dumb down your writing... ever... but do strive to perfect your art and to make the connection to your audience. You have the makings of a prose poet, however...
