How can I tell if ground beef has gone bad?

I know this question has been answered before, but mine has been frozen. It's sell by date was sometime in 2008, and it smells a little funny, but it's been frozen. I defrosted it and I'm cooking it right now and the smell is fading, but it's still there. Do you know if it's bad?
